Captain Alwyn G. Soppitt
President & CEO, Saint John Port Authority

A native of Northern Ireland, Captain Soppitt is a mariner by profession and has traded primarily in the North Atlantic between Europe and the St.Lawrence-Great Lakes ports, Atlantic Canada and the U.S. East Coast. He emigrated to Canada in 1972, continuing in the marine industry both at sea and ashore, working for Empire Stevedoring as Cargo Superintendent and with Kerr Steamship (Canada) Ltd. in Saint John, then in Halifax and Montreal.

Captain Soppitt has been with Saint John Port Authority for 25 years, serving as Assistant Harbour Master, Harbour Master and for the past ten years as President & CEO.

He is a director of the North Atlantic Ports Association, of the Saint John Board of Trade and of Uptown Saint John. He has served on the Board of the Association of Canadian Port Authorities and was Chair of the Association from 2003 to 2004. He has also served as a Board member of the American Association of Port Authorities and as Chair of the Canadian Delegation of AAPA. He is a member of the Company of Master Mariners of Canada.

Besides his marine qualifications, Captain Soppitt has also taken the Emergency Preparedness Program at the EPC College at Arnprior and is a graduate of the Queen’s University Executive Program.

Outside work, he enjoys the outdoors, camping and time with family. He was a Scout Leader with Scouts Canada for 20 years and received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 in recognition of service to his community. He is a member of the Saint John Rotary Club.

Captain Soppitt and his wife Jeannie reside in Saint John and have three children, two sons in Saint John and a daughter in Mission BC.
