4. When did cruise ships first call at the Port of Saint John? What ship was first? How has cruise business grown since?
-
The first large cruise ship to call Saint John was the Cunard Princess carrying 550 passengers in 1989. This first call was an unplanned visit due to inclement weather. The ship had been destined for Bermuda.
The community rallied together to welcome the passengers putting on a welcome which continues to this day for each cruise ship call-a rose for each female passenger and lapel pin for each male, a band, and a strong dose of maritime hospitality.
After the successful call of Cunard Princess the Saint John Port Corporation (now Saint John Port Authority) began marketing to cruise lines. Today all the world's major cruise lines call Saint John from May through October.
