July 20, 2007 Saint John (NB) – Authorities at the Port of Saint John are jubilant with the announcement today by the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc.(PotashCorp) regarding the development of a new mine and expanded milling operations in New Brunswick.
“This will greatly increase throughput of potash, create additional man-hours for port workers and increase shipping at the Port of Saint John” explained Captain Alwyn G. Soppitt, President & CEO of the Saint John Port Authority. “It is tremendous news for the port community, Sussex and New Brunswick,” he continued. The expansion will see an increase of potash exports from 800,000 tonnes a year to 2 million handled at specialized facilities at the Barrack Point Potash Terminal in Courtenay Bay.
The strategic and logistical importance of the New Brunswick mine and its proximity to the company’s existing terminal at the Port of Saint John were cited in a PotashCorp press release (July 20, 2007) as key factors in assuring the shortest shipping times to key Latin American markets like Brazil, where substantial long-term growth in demand for upgraded potash products is expected.
“PotashCorp has been an important and valued partner of the Port of Saint John for more than 20 years,” commented Soppitt. “We are delighted with their decision to increase their New Brunswick operations and we look forward to working with them as the project moves forward.”
Soppitt further commented that the success of PotashCorp’s business via the Port of Saint John highlights the importance of this marine gateway in north-south trading routes, a key market development area for other business sectors at the Port.
The Port of Saint John, New Brunswick’s largest and most diverse marine gateway, is a bulk and break bulk port with the capacity to handle containers and is the second busiest port of call for cruise ships operating in Atlantic Canada.
The Port is a commercially viable, self-sufficient business enterprise and a cornerstone of the local economy. It is a critical component of the region’s transportation infrastructure essential to many of New Brunswick’s major industries engaged in international trade and provides deep-water, ice-free access to shipping year round.
