Statement on Explosion at American Iron & Metal (September 14, 2018)

At approximately 7 am this morning, the American Iron and Metal (AIM) recycling facility experienced a significant explosion.  Port Saint John immediately contacted AIM and AIM ceased their operation, and conducted an incident investigation.

Since then, Port Saint John has been advised by AIM that the source of the explosion has been identified. The customer that supplied the material for recycling that caused the explosion has been notified. And we further understand that AIM will be taking additional action with this customer.

Port Saint John continues to monitor and work with AIM to ensure that they are aware of the need to take every action to reduce the number of incidents that occur at their facility. While there have been significant improvements over the past number of weeks, today’s explosion reminds all of that continuous improvement is important to their ongoing operations.

AIM has reassured Port Saint John that they will continue to improve their operation through more stringent monitoring and introduction of new technologies.
