Exhibit Opening Features 16 Paintings of Working Port from
Second Port Saint John Artist-in-Residence Fred Harrison

Saint John, N.B. –  Saint John Arts Centre and Port Saint John are pleased to announce an exhibit opening of 16 paintings featuring the Port of Saint John and people working in the port environment in the Port Saint John Gallery September 8th, 2023.  The opening is a public event on that date which will run from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm but Fred Harrison’s exhibition will be on display from September 8 – October 27, 2023 during open hours of the Saint John Arts Centre.

Artist and sculptor Fred Harrison, best known for his stunning murals in the Sussex area, was selected and announced in 2022 as the second biannual Port Saint John Artist-in-Residence.  Sarah Sackville, also of the Sussex area, was the first Port Saint John Artist-in-Residence with her work being displayed in September-October of 2021.  The next residency exhibition will occur in 2025.

In 2020, Port Saint John and the Saint John Arts Centre announced a landmark sponsorship of a signature gallery space at the Saint John Arts Centre, and partnership for a biennial artist residency, where a professional artist would be selected to create original works over a period of 10 months. Each residency includes an exhibition in the Port Saint John Gallery.

“The goal of the residency is to engage and support our port community, as well as to support the arts while elevating profiles and opportunities for New Brunswick artists. In viewing the completed art works now on display, we at Port Saint John were highly impressed by Fred’s ability to evoke the feeling of the working waterfront and the people who make it all happen.”

An interview with Fred Harrison and Andrew Kierstead was featured on a recent episode of the Port Podcast.
