Maiden All-Female Crew to Visit Port Saint John, first DP World stop on their World Tour

Saint John (NB) – Maiden, a 58-foot aluminum ocean racing yacht, and her all-female crew will visit Saint John in August of 2022. Maiden’s mission is to work with, raise funds for and support communities to enable girls into education and empower and support them to remain throughout their teenage years to reach their full potential and create better futures for all. Maiden launched from Dubai in January for her three-year, 90,000nm journey, sponsored by global logistics leader DP World.  The purpose of the World Tour is to raise awareness about the importance of girls’ education and women empowerment, to motivate girls to go into STEAM careers, and to fund girls’ education. In Saint John, the Maiden crew will visit summer camps, community centers, charities working with youth and organizations that engage with the local community through different events, such as, talk with the crew, day sails, boat visits and tours and fundraisers to help change the narrative of what a girl can achieve. During the 2021-2024 World Tour there will also be a focus on encouraging girls into Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) subjects, increasing their life and career choices. Many industries, including Maritime, are facing serious skills shortages and companies like DP World are committed to increasing female representation to bring much-needed skills and talent into the workforce.

DP World’s ‘One World, Our Future’ strategy prioritises sustainability and impact on the people, communities, and environment where they operate and a drive to lead a revolution in coordination – leaving a long-term benefit for the world we live in. Never has the education of girls been so important; over 130 million girls are not in education and after the pandemic and conflict around the world, it is estimated that an additional 11 million girls will not return to school or be able to access distance learning opportunities. This will affect the most vulnerable school-aged girls throughout the world, impacting their lives now and in the future. Maiden’s vision is a world where every girl has access to 12 years of quality education; equipping them to choose their future and fulfil their dreams.

After spending six weeks in Dubai, for the next few months Maiden will make her way through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean, making a few short stops before final preparations in Palma for the Trans-Atlantic to arrive in Florida in April 2022. Maiden will work her way up the East Coast of the USA with stopover hubs in Miami, Annapolis, New York, Long Island, (Saint John) New Brunswick and Newport. In October 2022 Maiden will return to Antigua before sailing to Dakar, Cape Town and Maputo in the first year. More details about the Saint John visit will be coming in the months ahead as the vessel travels to and along the East Coast of North America.

Patricia Baez, People Director, Americas Region, DP World said: “We are proud and looking forward to hosting the Maiden’s Mission in the port of Saint John. This will be a historical event which aims to encourage girls to discover new fields, empowering and educating women now and for future generations in our operations”

Craig Bell Estabrooks, CEO, Port Saint John said: “We are pleased to host Maiden on her call at Port Saint John and look forward to having her available on the waterfront for viewing.  Port Saint John strongly supports the mission of the DP World sponsored tour and advocates for a more diverse maritime sector and inclusion of girls and women in all sectors of society.  The education of girls is the foundation to this more diverse future.”

Terry Wilson, President, ILA Local 273 said: “If Maiden can change the course of just one girl in this region, to inspire her to finish high school and go on to university or encourage her to find a career in an industry where she helps to diversify a workplace, then Maiden’s stop-over in Saint John has been a success.”
