Task force on American Iron and Metal operation holds first meeting

Sept. 22, 2023

FREDERICTON (GNB) – The first meeting of the task force examining the events at American Iron and Metal (AIM) on Sept. 14 has taken place.

Announced on Monday, the task force was established to lead and co-ordinate a thorough investigation into the latest events at AIM and examine all aspects of the situation.

“Our government recognizes the importance of finding out what happened, and residents of Saint John – and all New Brunswickers – should feel confident that we are acting swiftly and thoroughly to provide those important answers,” said Premier Blaine Higgs. “I would ask for the public’s patience as we work to complete the investigation, and I look forward to receiving the recommendations at the conclusion of the review.”

The task force is chaired by Cheryl Hansen, clerk of the Executive Council, and Andrew Dixon, chief operating officer of Port of Saint John, is vice-chair. Other members of the task force are:

  • Attorney General Hugh J. Flemming

  • Post Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Arlene Dunn

  • Bruce Connell, director of risk and compliance, Port Saint John

  • Alex Calvin, senior director of infrastructure and asset management, Port Saint John

The task force has appointed Rob Simonds to conduct a comprehensive fire investigation. Simonds is a former chief of the Saint John and Hamilton, Ont., fire departments and has more than 35 years of experience in fire services and investigation.

Other actions have been taken to restrict operations at AIM until a complete investigation has taken place, including:

  • Port Saint John has suspended all activities at the terminal where the fire occurred, and only emergency operations related to stabilizing the site will be permitted.

  • The provincial government has suspended AIM’s approval to operate and directed it to cease activities.

In addition, the Department of Post-Secondary Education Training and Labour is co-ordinating resources for AIM employees related to workplace health and safety and labour-related support; these will be made available in the coming days.
